Feel Good About Your Choice to Tan
For as long as we can remember, it has been drilled into our heads that sunbed use is horrible for you, that sunbeds will no doubt lead to skin cancer, and that you should be ashamed if you choose to go tanning.
For the most part, those messages have been brought to us by sunscreen manufacturers, who have billions of dollars to gain by people staying out of the sun and coating themselves with their products 24/7. Dermatologists, too, have bought into these messages because guess who provides a significant amount of funding to the American Academy of Dermatology? Sunscreen manufacturers.
Finally, the truth has been unfolding about what the REAL risks and benefits are of tanning indoors. Moderate tanning – for those individuals who can develop a tan – is the smartest way to maximize the potential benefits of sun exposure while minimizing the potential risks associated with either too much or too little sunlight.
While we are not allowed to make health claims regarding the use of sunbeds (nor are we doctors) we CAN share the vast amount of benefits our customers have shared with us:
- BASE TAN: March would not be our busiest time of year if so many people felt base tans didn’t work. A base tan is your body’s natural sunscreen. Look at all the people who live by the equator – they have dark skin don’t they? This is nature’s way of providing them with the natural ability to protect their skin from harsh UV rays. And guess what populations have the lowest amount of skin cancer? Those by the equator. Something to think about….
- SKIN CONDITIONS: Psoriasis, Exzema, and Acne are the most common skin conditions that our customers have mentioned were successfully treated using sunbeds.
- VITAMIN D: Northerners are extremely deficient of this vitamin in the winter. Research has shown that deficiency leads to deadly cancers and weakened immune systems (as evidenced by the widespread cold and flu cases in winter). UVB rays stimulate vitamin D production naturally in the body. Many customers state that tanning 1x/week keeps them feeling healthy and cold/flu free.
- SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD)/MOODS: Winter can be a depressing time for people. We have several customers who don’t know how they would get through winter without tanning – it’s that important to their mood and overall happiness.
Does tanning pose potential health risks? Yes. So does being outside in the sun each day but our bodies have shown we need this sunlight! The wonderful thing? YOU have a choice…educate yourself so you can make a good choice for yourself.
Finally, you can feel good about your choice to tan!
